The Art of Inox.
In metallurgy, Inox, also known as inox steel or Stainless Steel, is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 11% chromium content by mass. Inox does not stain, corrode, or rust easily, but it is not stain-proof. It is also called corrosion-resistant steel or CRES when the alloy type and grade are not detailed, particularly in the aviation industry. There are different grades and surface finishes of Inox to suit the environment to which the material will be subjected in its lifetime. Common uses of Inox are cutlery and watch straps. Inox differs from carbon steel by the amount of chromium present. Carbon steel rusts when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film is active and accelerates corrosion by forming more iron oxide. Inox have sufficient amounts of chromium present so that a passive film of chromium oxide forms which prevents further surface corrosion and blocks corrosion from spreading into the metal's internal structure.
316L/Fine Steel also known as Surgical steel and Implant grade steel is a steel alloy that is the most common body piercing material in the United States. It can be polished to a shiny surface, and many people prefer this material to titanium because of its luster. The “L” stands for Low Carbon. If any class of steel truly deserves to be called surgical stainless steel these "L" class derivates of 316 would be it, It never develops surface rust and is even resistant to constant salt water exposure.
